Coinbase CEO Predicts Market Evolution with Tokenized Stocks

Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, has forecasted a groundbreaking shift in global markets through the advent of tokenized stocks. This innovation promises to deliver 24-hour trading, fractional ownership, and real-time settlement.

Armstrong highlights that tokenized stocks will enhance global access, enabling traders worldwide to engage with markets like never before. The capability for fractional ownership and around-the-clock trading is set to redefine the trading landscape.

Industry Reactions: Mixed Sentiments

While Armstrong's vision has stirred excitement, it also faces skepticism. Andreas Kohl supports tokenized shares but criticizes derivatives of CSD-held shares on Base. Kohl advocates for on-chain DRS with disintermediated trading for native BTC, arguing that post-fiat markets free from monetary policy manipulation will thrive.

Another voice in the debate, the German Foundation Coin, stresses that the success of tokenization hinges on the enforcement of legal rights and settlement finality on-chain. They caution that while access and liquidity can scale rapidly, trust and enforceability require systemic integration.

Retail Access and Regulatory Challenges

Tokenization is democratizing investments, granting retail investors access to assets traditionally reserved for high-net-worth individuals. However, experts warn of potential risks due to less stringent regulations. James Angel from Georgetown University describes tokens as speculative instruments rather than direct company-issued assets.

Despite regulatory uncertainties, tokenized equity transfers surged by 76% last month, reaching a total value of approximately $2.46 billion, according to RWA.xyz data. Brian Armstrong unveiled Coinbase's strategic plan to develop a comprehensive exchange platform by 2026, facilitating the trading of cryptocurrencies, stocks, and commodities.
