Ethereum Foundation Winds Down Holešky Testnet

The Ethereum Foundation is shutting down the Holešky test network after successfully completing the Fusaka upgrade. Launched in 2023, Holešky was pivotal for large-scale validator and upgrade testing, particularly for the trial of PeerDAS and partial data verification, which helped reduce bandwidth for validators and supported layer-2 networks.

Key Developments

  • The closure of Holešky follows the Fusaka upgrade, which introduced PeerDAS, enhancing scalability and efficiency for layer-2 solutions.
  • Operators are encouraged to transition to Hoodi and Sepolia, the primary testnets now supporting Ethereum's staking and application development.
  • The decommissioning underscores Ethereum's strategic move towards short-lived, specialized testnets that focus on specific upgrade milestones.

According to an announcement on X, Holešky will experience planned node shutdowns two weeks post-Fusaka completion. Its successor, Hoodi, launched in March 2025, offers a new environment for validators, while Sepolia remains favored by developers.

With Holešky's sunset, Ethereum continues to innovate with purpose-built testnets to efficiently manage network upgrades and development.
